What is typography?

The appearance of words, captions, language on print material such as a newspaper and a website are typography. The relevance of typography is that it says something to a reader. It influences our outlook of a company or brand. It can playful and crazy such as with fashion brands.

or it can be very professional and direct like a bank's logo.

In both these logos, we see appropriately chosen typography that helps audiences understand the environment associated with a brand.
While studying typography, I was shown 4 typography games by my professor.
1. Shoot the Serif: in this typographic exercise, one must identify the difference between serif vs. san serif and shoot the letters that are serif.
2. Type connection: in this game, one must choose a font based on your personality type. From there, a series of questions are asked so that you may find the ideal match for your chosen font and create a wonderful pairing.
3. Type War: more of a matching game, players will be shown a letter and from there must decide which of two font options they are. This one is more of a memory game than a skill game as you must be able to discern two different font types.
4. Kern Type: a very simple game. In this one, players must navigate and move letters within a three-line space to find the most visually appealing layout with appropriate spacing.
ok...so what?

Well, typography is a very important strategic visual element. The fonts a brand chooses says a lot about their clientele and approach. Brands like Dollz Kill use a more wicked, alternative font to capture the audience of ravers, music festival go-ers, etc. A brand like Free People uses a more feminine, subdued font to appeal to more boho-oriented women. As a result, typography is a very important aspect of digital design. The font, spacing and placement allow audiences to create associations with a brand and gives the audience an inclination of what they're about to immerse themselves in.
