Public Relations has evolved in many ways and has pushed media teams to think outside of the box to create stunning graphics and original content. Two programs that have allowed for many creatives, including PR professionals, to explore and create new and mind-blowing content are InDesign & Photoshop.

InDesign is an Adobe publishing and typesetting software. Its used to create published works like posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, dossiers, etc. In my past experience, I use InDesign for presentation purposes, whether its to release a collection or create a lookbook. I had previously used it to create a magazine dossier for my Design class in Barcelona. We had used to it to create moodboards, vision boards, UX personas, etc.

Photoshop (my personal favorite) is a graphics and image editing software. Graphic designers and photographers, and many other creatives use this software to edit images, create original designs, collages, etc. I personally lean more towards Photoshop as I enjoy the creative aspect of Public Relations. Through Adobe Photoshop, I edit different fashion shoots, add various design elements and in rare occasions, create new designs for clothing.

I think what makes each program unique is its ability to showcase the creativity of different members of a PR team. PR professionals that have a taste for aesthetic and formatting, in my opinion, lean more towards InDesign. They enjoy typography, UI & UX design. They create order for the more radical creatives.

As someone who is more on the radical side of creativity, Photoshop is my playground. It's not just changing lighting or adding a filter. Its the ability to use various textures, images, graphics to create something unique to you and your brand. Those who enjoy freedom and chaotic creativity would probably enjoy this more within the PR profession.

Yet these two are so complementary that ideally, you find a way to express your brand with both. I've included a mini reel I created using both programs from my trip to Rome!

SO how do I get to use these two programs and LEARN?

honestly, YouTube. I first learned how to photoshop and edit through various YouTube tutorials. Here is one my favorite tutorials from when I first started. Other than that, take some classes on design. Ask any of your photographer friends or graphic design friends. I bet they would not mind giving you some basic pointers and how-to's.

BUT WAIT!

just because you know how to use these programs doesn't mean your design is always "good." First and foremost, trial and error. Whatever you create at first may not be exactly what you envisioned. Just like any other skill, its through practice. Constant creativity. Expanding your knowledge by using the internet to find other teachers and skills. You are just as responsible for your creativity as your development. Have a clear vision and just go for it. You only hurt yourself by doubting yourself!
